I Solved My Motor Problems - New Mount

Just in time for Father's Day I think I finally solved my motor problems. 2010 Suzuki High Thrust, Power Tilt, 25", Remote.

I had to brag a little, but I thought you guys might like to see how I solved the motor mount issue. Materials:
1/8" stainless steel
two 3/4" thick pieces of mahogony
six 1/4" SS flat head screws with washers and lock nuts
six 5/16" SS bolts with washers and lock nuts

Curly,
Here's my original sketch. Due to material availability we changed from 1/4" AL to 1/8" SS. I also wanted white oak, but couldn't find any. The only somewhat critical dimension is the 14.5" inside dimension for the sides, but even then it has some give. The actual dimension of the flat stock was slightly different than my sketch due to the bending. I let the guys here that bend metal for a living do their thing, but again, the dimensions aren't that critical.

The 1/4" flat head screws are counter-sunk into the wood for looks, but you could just bolt it if you wanted to.

I made the mounting a little too vertical, if I should have let it under cut just a little. Then again the motor just makes it down to vertical, so I'm going to leave well enough alone. I do have to cut away a bit of the original mounting surface so "secondary tiller" doesn't hit it when tilted.

The Suzuki 9.9HT is really a 15hp power head, so I can't imagine anyone would need more extension, but other motors might let you get away with a bit less.

One more thing, I'll have to come up with a new nav light for the stern or always have the motor down at night.

That explains why I couldn't see a motor or mount when I saw your boat on the 17th at the Marina.

Looks good and it probably makes you feel good when you see your idea come to fruition...

Yeah, the used Johnson Sailmaster went into the shop and came out in a cardboard box. They said it had been marinated in saltwater at some point, and would cost a fortune to fix it right. Cathy put her foot down and "forced" me to buy a new one.

We're there most weekends, stop by and say hello.

My wife "forced" me to buy the C22. She said the Newport 16 was just too small. We will stop and say hello if we get up there on a weekend.

We live in Kenosha but like to eat at various restaurants in Racine.
The Chancery is real good there...seems to be better than the one in Kenosha.

Tom I'm thinking I might have to modify my mount also, we seem to only use the motor in heavy waves and we pull the prop out alot and I hate that sound. I know it also kills momentive,and not to good for the motor.
Can we get a few more pictures?

Our Evinrude is a 9.9 thats the same as thier 15 also , I think all you need is new jets in the carberator.

The extension I made was to give room to tilt the bigger four stroke motor.

In waves it will theoretically be slightly worse than the original setup. When the boat pitches bow down, the motor being farther back will pull the motor up more. It's only 5.5" so in reality I don't think it will be noticeable, and anyway it was necessary for the new motor.

I'm not sure what else you would want pictures of. It's a very simple part, just a bent piece of steel and two pieces of wood, all through bolted. Someone on here (sorry I can't remember who or find the post) had a much more elegant solution involving modifying the original mount.
