Helping Others Has Helped Me

Post by Chrysler20%26 »

My C- 26 is back home in the drive way. This is the secend time, that I have lowded it on the trailer, an steped the mast. With no one around an by my self. I loaded the boat an loward the mast an got hear home. Halping others has helped me lern how to get hear done. This fall, I was taking mother ( 89 years old ) out for a sail. I have to motor past Sail Bob II to get out, he was in his cabin, so I said in a lowd voice I Bob I an takink mother out for a sail. Will we are motoring slowly out the river, an I see this noice sailboat comming up behind me. It's Sail bob II, what a treat two C-26's side by side going out the river. We get out to the lake, Sail Bob pulls a rope an his jib comes out. As for me I go out on the bow to put the sail on an rase it up, wile I am doing that sail bob is sailing cercals around me, 3 or 4 of them. Will we are sailing down wind, with just the front sail, An sail bob has to roll in his sail, so that I can keep up. I don't rase I just wont to be first. Sail bob's boat is loaded, about 1,000 # more than my boat, an his sit's 4 inches deeper in the water, an I can't keep up. Will I did not eaven wont to talk about it till now. Try it agin in the spring Sail Bob. You all may have mised it, Windword had a Roller- Furling listed in the for sail, I am going to buy it. I an going to have a part of the Great Windword on my boat in the spring. O happy day's to come

Hey, remember I'm selling the roller furling sail, not the furling unit itself, right? You'll still need so scare up the furler unit (drum, swivels, extrusions) if you don't already have one.

Sounds like fun!
I'm looking forward to the day I can get Lady Jo on the water with Honu again! It has been a while. Hopefully by then we'll have the spinnakers ready to fly!

Roller furling is a very nice convenience item! In my book it goes beyond convenience and into the saftey arena! I highly recommend it to anyone! Remember to keep the furling lines snug when unrolling the sail or you'll end up with a knot when you try to furl the sail!

Roller Furling - One of my top wish list items for EE, along with all lines led aft.

Everything on the Cal21 is led aft, and it is so much more enjoyable to hoist sail from the cockpit. Before I brought it home for the interior gutting I also ran downhauls on the genny and main to the cockpit and loved it.

Oh yeah that was a great day glad to hear you got your boat out ok. (I would have helped but was having heart surgery) - What the other Bob didn't mention is that he was using a 100% jib an I was using my 130% Genoa and it is on a Harken roller furller. Makes a big difference in a low wind. An yeah I do outweigh a lot of other 26's because I live on mine during the summer and have an oak interior with full galley/stove/Engel fridge and water tank not to mention all the extra clothes and food an even with three battery banks weighing a total of 400 lbs. I do sit right on my waterlines. She's still a quick boat though. Like Bob said I don't race, but don't like coming in last ether - LOL - It's funny how when you see another boat you tighten up the rig readjust the sail but your not racing!!!

Scott got to tell you a story about roller furling - This last summer I was out on Saginaw Bay by myself - My roller furler jammed, the wind was light and was making about two knots toward Bay City. I decided good time to run up to the bow and unjam it. Going over the cabin roof I had a hold of the boom and the main halyard. all my lines are run aft through deck mounted brakes and sheaves. I stepped on the lines for the topping lift and main halyard and they rolled. My feet went flying and I was flung backwards over the rail luckly I had a hold of the main halyard (death grip) I grabbed it with my other hand and swung back onto the deck (dam near twisting my finger off) Now going into the water wouldn't have been bad (I am a certified advanced SCUBA Diver and was a Water Safety Instructor when I was younger) but CRYSTA was on autopilot headed for Bay City (20 miles away) I would have been treading water off of Point AuGres and CRYSTA would have happily been sailing to Bay City by herself. Having a furler is great most times but, can be a real pain when they jam (BTW - this is the first time I've had it jam in seven years)

LOL!
Not that's funny!

I'm glad it all worked out for ya though! I can just picture it! Honey, get the camera! Look at that guy in the sailboat!!! LOL!

Yeah, I was out two weeks ago on a hunter 30. The owner had just bought it, put a new roller jib on it and wanted lessons moving to and from his slip. We spent and hour or so coming and going from his slip until he was comfortable. Then we went for a sail.
Unfortuantely I do not believe he had ever used the furler. Somehow the furler line jumped out of the drum and made a big mess.

Funny how wonderful and reliable a furler is until you do not treat it properly! Then it bits you in the arse!

Thanks for the great story! Now I can smile my way through the morning!

Hey that's what happened to me "the line jumped the drum" boy what a pain had to unreave the line and reset everything - while having a finger that I thought was broke (jes sprained) What cracks me up is the thought that if me sail cat "Fog" had been aboard she'd been the only one sailing that day. Now she is a smart cat but she doesn't have opposable thumbs and can't grip the wheel to steer. Maybe I can teach her to push the off button on the autopilot with her nose - LOL

Do that and your ship will go down in history with the Flying Dutchman and Mary Celeste! LOL!

If you sail alone with the autopilot a lot, jack lines might be of intrest to you! ;)
