Keel cable tip on C26

Post by Guillaume C. »

Maybe this info can be useful to someone here. In the last month Ive got to change the keel cable 2 time with 2 different method that worked fine. (first time is was the old cable that broke, second time it was my new fixation - U bolt made for cable- that sqeezed the cable too much. )

1- you need a long cable and a new hose to cover it. remove the old hose - wich of course make a hole in the boat and the water flow in! - and put the new cable in the hole, the water was not a problem, maybe 500ml got in. Then you can pull on the cable in water to get it back in the boat (thats why you need a long cable), make the loop and fix it to the keel.

2- simply make the loop at one end and put it in the hose by the bottom of the boat. then of course fix the loop to the keel and the other end to the winch. this was pretty easy but if the trough-hull fitting dont offer a clean hole it might not work, this is why I described the first way I did it.

second time I used aluminium "lead" block (dunno how its called in english) and it seem to hold, it certainly put less stress on the wire than the U-bolt

Salut Guillaume!

I'm curious about attaching to the keel ... did you have to go underwater for that?

I changed my "cable" and winch before launching, hopefully both will survive the summer.

Happy Sailing.

Salut!

Yes with both method you have to go underwater, but anyone with moderate swiming skill and a scuba mask should be fine. Tough i recommend doing it in water hotter than 62F :P
