New Sailor

Ahoy shipmates. First of all I just want to say thanks in advance this is great to know soo many c22's are still in use. In October of last year I acquired a 1975 C 22 to the likes that most of you probably have seen in the past. I am still in the process of renovating this vessel, however, I have had successful water trials and the boat sails like a dream to me. Also let me tell you that I never sailed a boat or have even been near a sail boat before I bought this one. I am amazed that sailing could be this easy.
I have some pictures that I would like to share but I really am not good with computers.
If anyone could help me, it says that my pic is 2.6Mb but only allowed 101 kb right? so how do I load a pic?
Also, the boats swing keel seems to give me problems, It's broken two cables, Whats the proper way to stop this?
Any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

The cable is supporting an 850 lb steel keel, so I would first have to ask what were you using before and where did it break?

Not sure how thick mine is and sorry it's in the water now,,, maybe 1/4 inch,,, but mine is SS and I replaced it 4 yrs ago, no problems since. But if yours broke and the keel swung forward, I would look for cracks at the aft end of the keel trunk that can cause leaks eventually. Mine had numerous hairline cracks and the water could be seen by opening the keel pin inspection port and looking at the base of the keel pin bracket on the starboard side in the cabin.

When I bought it it looked like 1/8 inch stainless and that broke so I did a quick cheap fix and did galvanized that was rated for 850 lbs. it was on for about 3 weeks and I went to shallow and got stuck in mud at low tide in Doctors Lake here in Orange Park, It was a windy day and it appeared as if the wake hitting the boat had rubbed the cable off at the connection near the keel(I didn't know the water was only 1 foot deep off my friends dock at low tide!), I used stainless cable bolts there and I figured it wasnt right. It kinda looks like the cable was gnawed on by a rat now.

That's what I wanted to hear! Well at least I sailed a Sunfish a few times. I won't say how many years ago that was.

Its great to see all the new members that have joined up of late and one does get the feeling that the C26 is out numbered on this forum. As far as posting photos, type in posting photos under search at the top of the page... I'm no good at linking. The ease of sailing is music to my ears as well having never sailed before. Sadly my inaugural season is still a bit down the road with so much work still pending on my C26.

Hello and welcome. The keel cable should be 316 stainless steel at a diameter of 3/16's with swadged ends. (although I think some of them came with rope as oem). A couple of things could be a problem for you, the keel pocket could fouled and blocking the keel, there's also an anti sway pin in the keel trunk, it uses a nylon rod to apply side pressure to the keel. That rod could be in too far and blocking the keel or just holding it in place. Or, your cable could just be too small. Gotta be carefull with the keel though. If the keel were up a good ways and the cable broke, the keel could do some real dammage when it ramed home.

If you are breaking 3/16 cable I'm surprised you are not seeing a lot of flex at the companion way step since the keel wench is mounted to the underside of that step.

As already stated, that keel cable needs to be marine grade stainless or it will simply break again. Especially since you will be in brackish or salt water!

Red sails on your C-22! Very stylish, I must say I like it, don't know if I'd pay extra for it but I do like it.

Looking at your Keel photo, I can't make it out. Is the eye where your cable attached to the cable broken. Or is it just the Cables loop as broken?

Oh and A+ for posting the photo. They help a lot when describing something of question.

Thanks, Alan, it looks to me like the original connection broke, someone redrilled a new hole and left the old broken piece of metal stiking up like a knife, it sawed thru my cables.

Looks like some drilled another hole for the shackle and did not grind off the trashed edge where the old one pulled thru. Your cable wasn't breaking, it was being cut. That's a good find. That could have caused some real dammage.

Welcome Daniel It was nice talking to you at Sailor Exchange, I sailed all over the east coast of Florida this year and have thought many times that having a C-22 in Florida would be more then perfect for many adventures, As I said I would have had no problem sailing my C-22 to the Bahamas and can't wait to hear when you do.

When I told you that we only sailed our C-22 13 times it was always weekend adventures, we would always stay aboard 3 or 4 days,lol we never just day sailed it.
