Watch that boom !!

Got a crack on the noggin today. Unexpected boom crossing during an unintended jibe ? Nope, on the trailer with the boom sheeted fairly tight.

Wasn't worried about that boom, after all it was only swinging a couple inches, maybe 4. Just bouncing around a touch while I git the sails in the boat.....Ah but that 4 inches of bouncing around is really almost a foot from one end of the swing to the other end. And during a wind gust that 8 inches was plenty of swing to pick up speed and conk me good. lol.

Was pretty surprised later when I saw myself in a mirror and realized that my forehead had all this red stuff coagulating on it.

And me without my Hello Kitty bandaids too...

So Saturday safety tip, watch that boom even when she's sheeted down, doesn't take a full gibe swing to hurt ya !

Sorry man! Glad you are OK and all is not any worse than what you have received. I know sometimes my lessons can kinda suck but the real ones can really HURT!

Bloodthirsty aren't you,

You know we probably all never really think of the boom as too dangerous on that sheeted condition, after all we aren't under sail, and it is really only moving around a couple inches. BUT you wouldn't hand the boom to a buddy and say 'hey pull this back eight inches from my forehead and give it a quick swing..'

Word to the wise, its always dangerous.

I haven't caught it on the noggin yet, but that hard edged extrusion looks pretty unforgiving!

On H:)ppy Place we refer any cranial contact with the boom as a "BOOM BANG"

EE glad you are ok and that boom don't go that far over the cockpit you must have been near the compaionway. My trip was cut short with an outboard problem as it turned out was not serious but unlike stink potters I was able to sail home and to the dock.

One of my best days was a couple years ago when I sailed big ole EE right up to the dock alongside a Flying Scot who was doing the same...perfect moment !

I remember reading in David Crosby's autobiography 'Since Then' that he 'hated motoring' and loved to bring the Mayan into port under full sail, flipping off all the jet skis along the way..
