C-20 July 31 Sail @ Stony Creek Plus Tongue Extension Tip

After a really tough month, this was the most beautiful ride I've ever had on a sailboat so far. He never got a chance to sail in her like he wanted, but I think my Dad was looking down and checking us out with a smile. 10-12 knots and a crystal clear sky during the evening... just gorgeous! Plus I was able to take along my wife, my daughter, her boyfriend and his parents too. Ya gotta love the C-20. Where else can a party barge be had for the price of a used lawn tractor!
Things I learned this go around: my cheapo lightweight floor jack, a block of wood and a couple taps with a mallet came in really handy when it was time to return the extending tongue to it's original position.
Things I screwed up... again... after a real effort to get it right while lifting the mast, I still managed to find the back stay on the outside of the rear stanchions at the end of my push! corrected that quick enough and then after pounding my chest for joy, proceeded to look around for the main halyard shackle.... oops I did it again! There it was, stuck at the top of the masthead....again. That's three for three now! Down she went for try #2. Now I know why sailors began talking like sailors @#%& !!! Any way, it was all worth it

The halyard at the top of the mast brought a big smile to my face! Not necessarily laughing at you but at when it happened to me!

I had an 18' Solcat many moons ago! I loved that boat and would buy her back in a heartbeat. One day I was at a local warm water lake with the boat. I was to take my wifes brother sailng and basically show off! After struggling with stepping the 30' mast ( yes, 30' ) I realized the main halyard was at the top! No worries I said ( while swearing under my breath ) we'll just float her out a few feet and tip her over! What a site what must have been! We flipped her up on her side in 4' of water and grabbed the halyard. Then we righted her! See! That's how we do it! LOL!!!!

Most excellent report, thanks for putting it up and with photo's too.

As for mast raising and lowering, ah, yea, it can get a little exciting at first. Then you get the hang of it.

I have a new mast hinge plate in my future that will make it much easier.

Thanks for the pics and great video! Heading to Muskegon tomorrow. Kids Hobie Hawk 9' sailboat is coming along. No Haylards to worry about when the sail slides over the top of the mast!!! Not to mention I think the whole boat weighs about the same as the rudder on the C20 (75lbs). First time out with our C20 last weekend my brother-in law and I stepped the mast. Not bad at all with the 2 of us. If you're doing it yourself I feel your pain having to raise and lower a couple times. Both times out in the C20 so far we had 8 people. Not crowded at all!!! Like your idea on the floor jack to get the tongue extension back in. We used pry bars, grease, blocked the trailer wheels, and left the hitch attached to the van and slowly backed up.

Raising the mast myself? LMAO !!! I ALWAYS invite my daughter's boyfriend (and my daughter) sailing when i go. He's great company plus he has a strong back. Someday I suppose I'll need to build an A-frame device similar to the one Mizzousailor constructed, but Anthony has a standing invite to go sailing whenever I go. He's also more photogenic than myself, which helps the watchability of my videos (I am not the guy in the avatar-LMAO again!). ':lol:'

Smart thinking on the daughter's boyfriend invite. Sounds like it works out good for both of you. I believe the manual says mast can be raised by 1 or 2 people. I'd have a chiropractor's appointment already scheduled for the following day if I tried to do it myself. LOL

Good to see that you are enjoing your C-20. I maid up an ( A ) from 2-10 foot condoit joined at one end with 2 x 2 angle. the other end has a hole driled in it, so that I can bolt throu the turnbuckel of the forword shroud. Workes vary will for me

Yep, I'm definitely going to fix up an A-frame this weekend. I really wanted to make it to the Thurs evening CreekFleet races down here at Stony Creek Metropark but couldn't due to being blown off by my deck hand, er....nephew, in favor of a bonfire or some other stupid thing youngsters do when they all get together in the summer (LMAO &

).
I'm looking forward to going up around your way to Hubbard Lake for Labor Day. It should be fun to try out a bigger lake. The nephew will be expecting to go cruising as there are usually no other distractions at the cabin. On the way, I think I'm going to stop into Wilson's in Pinconning to pick up some sailing snacks..... LIMBURGER CHEESE W/ ONIONS ON RYE WILL BE SERVED ON BOARD!!!!!! ,
