Halyard attachment

I am replacing both the jib and main halyard ropes on my boat and it is just tied on with a bowline knot. It was pretty chewed up so I am planning on using a eye splice with a thimble and wraping it with tape to cut down on the rope damage. What methods are y'all using.

I have a kit for doing the eye splice that is a little different method from that one but in the end does basically the same thing. It's definitely a lot of work but they look really nice when you get done and I think the rope would fail before the loop could come undone.
