teak/holly sole

Post by NYCSAILOR »

well, the "oil canning" in my cabin sole has gotten real bad in two places...at teh bottom of the ladder above the bilge and in the area of the "lstep/landing" in front of the head ont eh way to the v berth.

I plan on ripping up the OEM carpet and dealing with this...has anyone got a layout or plans of what I am likely to find and have to deal with...I would like a teak/holly sole with some proper access to the full bilge.

right now all I got is a 4" hole below the ladder....alsoI have the fixzed keel so I do not have the table and swing keel in the middle... any thoughts on how to do this repair / install would be great.

I once had on my wishlist a teak/holley floor. Once I realized that the sole of my cabin is made up of mostly angles with little flat area I just went with indoor outdoor carpet. Granted it does not as nice as the teak and holey but ALOT easier to put down.

When it is dark I just pretend.

Funny LOL!

I have the OEM capeting and it is scary, also a soft spot above the bilge makes me say it is time for a new sole....

If I am going to do it I might as well try and improve the situation and I, like you long the teak holly sole like I had on my J30.

I took a good look this weekend and you are so right// all angle but this fake, plastic, teak holly sole, might work as it glues down like carpeting, but is pretty pricey. I will be redoing all the cushions too...(ugh!)

The best review of this problem that I have seen was in "Good Old Boat". I believe it is the Sept. 2004 issue. The author tore out the floor and replaced, floor, ballast, and plywood winch stand supports. It is probably still available in as a back edition. Several good picture of what you might run into.

Good memory Holiday ! That's the right month/issue - I have it "somewhere" at my house. It was a 77 swing keel, lead bars in foam for ballast. EE is concrete with lead pellets are best I can tell.

Not sure how the fixed keel differs in that little bilge area (except for maybe not having the bump for the keel to swing into), but here's the link to my rear sole repair -

just a thought, but a guy in the slip next to me has a oday 25 and he used the vinyl planks that look like hardwood flooring but are very flexable, they come with adheasive on them but he used some flooring glue as well. it looks very good and appears to be durable, its not as a good as teak and holley but he only has about 40 bucks in the floor, since my c-26 sank im thinking of trying this myself when i finish my interior,if it dosent work well i wont be out of alot of money.

THANKS! onthe fixed keel 26, the sole is wide open area 9 no table or keel lifting mech. so I would like it to be nicer.

I wondered through Home Depot last night for inspiration and I am thinkning about the laminate flooring as well, the cost is nice but let's face it...the time and our labor is the real issue for me...if I am going to take precious time and sweat my as% off onthis I would like it to look good, last and be proper....I did not come up with anything for the sole but I did see something I might consider for the sides of the cabin where the old OEM cloth and foam is falling off and the rough hull is exposed... at Home Depot the have something like bead board that iss tounge/groove that is to be used for wainscot decor...I think this might look real good on teh cabin sides on the horixontal...they have white and an oak tha can be stained anyway you like... it might add too much weight and be inflexible for the curves ...

How aboout some cabin pics for inspiration anyone....

NOTE: i am in a new marina and i am VERY surprised at teh interst in my boat...firstly it goes beyond the curious of "who is the new guy...let's check him out...and my boat is a HEAP...if is just filthy and run down and everything on it os about 20years old...BUT they are curious admiring of the lines ( I have the Original "areo or bullet" style fore deck and that it is a chrysler and they seem to hear that it is a good reputation as a sturdy sailor....

anyone have any experiencewith plateak or any of th efake teak laminate... ( kinda like lanoleaum of our parents).. I am thinking of doing that in the cabin sole ( see above) for ease of install .. should lay and flex like carpet, and also for lightweight ( that means alot on a sail boat) but I am worried it will look cheap and crappy... I saw some samples and it is hard o tell what a entire cabin sole will look like... so I am thinking of usine real wood verneer panels .. lot more work, more weight and more expense, but it should give a real yachty feel and wondering if anyone had an experience with these products or saw them installed somewhere

When Jeff and I went to the Cleveland Boat show they had a display for the plasiteak stuff. There seemed to be two types one for the inside and one for the outside. They both looked good. The inside stuff looked way to slick but the stuff for the outside looked like it would work great for the cockpit and inside. It was abit rougher and would not give you a slippery issue.

If I had not just glued down carpet I would have seriously thought of using that.

I am glad you got to take a first hand look...I have never seen the product in person and I am worried that it would just look like cheesy lanolium and cheapen the cabin rather w/more platic than actually enrich it which is what I am trying to do w/teak -holly sole....I like the idea of a very EZ install, cheaper product and , of course , save weight!! but They did send me a sample of "flexiteak" and the sample is way to small to really tell how a entire sole will look inthis stuff...do you think the big expanse of the c-26 sole could pull it off w/plasteak or plas deck or whatever you suggest looked best? I am sick of ratty carpet and sick of replacing it and there is just a little too much plastic int he cabin already to have a bare plastic floor, + I want to add a proper bilge hatch as well...remember I have the fix keel so I don't have the swing keel trunk in the middle..it is all open cabin
