I took the Honu out yesterday between Everett and Whidbey Island in Puget Sound with my wife, son and my son's friend, both of them 20 years old now. It's the first time they had ever been out on the boat with me. We had Sun and wind off the beam, the white caps just bearly there. Spray over the bow. Swing keel cable howling as the Honu zipped along at about a 20 degree lean all afternoon. It was SWEET! Everything worked great except for my son and wife getting a little sea sick.
My wife and son think they will wait for a calmer day next time. But my sons friend.... Oh he is hooked, not sick at all, never on a small boat before. This kid is a sailor just like his parents were. They were both merchant marine's. That's how they met, in the merchant marines. Anyway, man this kid was rail meat, Helmsman, maning the jib, balancing the boat was a natural skill for him. You've heard the term poopy eating grin. It's going to take days to get it off his face. I see a sailboat in his future. I know his dad Al is thinking about a boat and Al has sailed with me before.
