OK, so I have three winches that came with my C26, only . . . they are not attached. In addition, they are not stock, and will not fit where the originals were once attached (they are larger). I probably would not want to put them back where they were anyway, as it appears that one of them was ripped right off the boat.
So I was thinking of attaching them farther forward along the combing where it gets a little wider, specifically where the clam cleats are, then adding some cam cleats to replace the clams. The two matching winches for the sheets are black anodized #7 Lewmar single speed, with five attachment bolts. I plan on making a backing plate for them to avoid the possibility of having them ripped out again, though I don't know what could happened to the originals in the first place.
The third winch is a chrome #5 Lewmar single speed, with 4 attachment bolts. I think that I will mount this on the cabin top and I can then run the halyards back to cockpit for an easy hoist.
Should I consider not using these winches and instead upgrading to two-speed self tailing winches before I go through the trouble of installation?
Any one have any comments or suggestions? Has anyone upgraded thier winches?
