C 22 Windows Leaking

Post by skyking »

Hello everyone, I recentally aquired a 1976 C 22 that has been stripped down to the point where I'm going to repaint it. My windows are all spiderwebbed & checkered. They are not broken , but they are not pretty either. Does anyone know where I can find replacements and what they will cost? My other thought was to remove and then reseal them, because they are leaking?

I welcome all suggestions, And I'm sure that I will have many more questions.

Thank you, Tim

You'll likely have to use the old panes for templates and cut new ones.

To keep them from leaking- remove them carefully (don't bend those frames, they are pretty flimsy), and while you have them apart to replace the panes, clean the frame channels really good. Dirt gets in there and can hinder the seal.

Hey Tim,

How goes it with your windows?? I replaced mine with smoked plexiglass that filled the gap in the frame and just siliconed them in place. It was a messy pane in the keyster and took 2 people... but by the last window had it figured out. Definately try not to bend the frames any more than you have to, but they way they're in there it happens...

Here is a link to a pict of the clamps I used to hold it together until screwed back in... they were modified with grooves to help hold the frame at the tip of the clamp while inserting... Sorry I just can't get picts to view here.

I actually finished them last week, I wanted to use the smoked glass as well , but I didnt have much luck finding what I wanted. So I want with the clear plex-A-glas.

The glas that I removed was 3/16" thick, and the glas that I replaced it with was I believe marked as .122 About a 1/32" thicker, I didnt think that would be a problem as the old stuff was fairly loose in the frame..

It all worked out, the thicker glass made for a tighter fit in the frame. I had soaked the rubber seals in a bucket of hot water & marine wash to get every trace of grime & dirt off possible, than I also had to improvice to get the frames over the now almost to thick glass & seal.

I was able to slide two 8 penny nails thru the screw holes to use them as handles to ever so slightly spread the frames just enough to get them over the seal.

Bingo...I dont think water could get past the seal if it wanted to.
While the windows were out I had taken the oppertunity to try and salvage what was a very weathered finish..

A few hours with some 1000 grit wet sand paper, a bucket of water & lots of elbow grease. Then a quick going over with a buffer & some Mothers cleaner / wax and a second round with Mothers phase 2 Sealer and it looks like we may get a few more years out of the finish yet..
