Minor leak / Fixed Keel c22

Post by skyking »

I finally got to the point where I could launch our 22. After which I noticed a slight trickle of water coming from around one of the keel bolt areas.

I had previousaly chiseled out the old sealant from around the keel and replaced it with the 3M 5200.

My thought is to put a second coat of the 5200 on the bottom side as well as put some around the bolt area?

your thoughts are appriciated...

keep a look out fot my restoration pictures....coming soon.. :D

Hmm,

That would worry me. A few drips not so much, a trickle that sound like room for more investigation. More Calking might work for a while but I think that could be covering up a bigger issue. Note this is my opinion not any technical skill or great insight into the issue. This would make me nervous on my boat and I would take it appart, track it down and fix it.

Do wait and hear from others on this issue. I'm a newbe here and some times I go after little problems with a Cannon when a little sealant would have done me.

Thanks
Alan

After some more investigating I found that its not leaking at the keel bolts, but there is a large brass pin with several smaller bolts ( covered with sealant)around it.in between the two keel bolt areas. This is where the water was coming from? after sitting in the water for about 30 hours there was less than an inch of water in the compartment.

I also found that the 5200 sealant had a hairline crack in it, which is probably my falt ? Maybe I didnt clean the hull good enough?

What is the brass pin for? it almost looks like it could be used for a lifting devise?
