Saftey Tip
When is the last time you checked your medical kit you keep aboard? remember, you were so excited and ready to go when you were outfitting your boat? Most boaters that put together the kit forget to check expiration dates on any medicines, lotions, or sun block! If you put a medical or saftey kit aboard your boat, check it! Make sure all items are still good! Maybe even toss in a small, cheap, compact mirror for saftey sake!

Know your chart!!!
Here are a couple of snippits from a chart describing the shoreline. One defines a section of the shoreline with a solid line and one describes a section of the shoreline with a dashed line!!

Please tell me what the chart is telling you about each shoreline !

Solid, surveyed. Dashed, not surveyed. Possibly sand and subject to shoaling. Caution required

Great point about the medical kits! Health and safety preparations are critical when you may be miles from medical care. A related topic is to get training on how to use the health and safety equipment you do have... good equipment is useless to potentially dangerous if you don't know how to use it properly.

A first aid/CPR course only takes a couple of hours of your time... you know you want to learn it

ANSWER:

A dashed line indicates an unsurveyed coastline.
A solid line indicates a surveyed coastline.

For those that are unaware:
All chart symbols and definitions are defined in NOAA's chart no 1!!
You can learn a whole lot and take away some of the mystery by looking at a local chart and chart No 1 at the same time!! All those wierd symbols and markings all have a meaning that may impact your sailing safely!

Chart No 1 is no longer in print however can be downloaded for FREE in parts or as a whole from:
http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/chartno1.htm#toc

The "Total Document" link at the top will get it all at once but is 85 MB in size!!! Consider your download speed!! LOL!

Definitely worth your time to learn how to read the charts. I got into an argument and missed a chance to see PT Barnams mansion from the water, because we misunderstood the ssh markings on the chart. (shoals sounds right, but it's really sand and shells).
