Mondays 12/07/2009 Question and boating safety Tip ANSWERED

Post by CaptainScott »

Saftey Tip:
Ropes and lines! When does a rope become a line??
Some people say when it is loaded onto a boat. Some people say it is when it is on a boat and has a job. How about this . . . On your sailboat would you allow anyone to take a line and wrap it around their neck?? No way! That would be suicide! Crazy! Stupid! What if the line went tight . . What if . . . . .
OK then with that thought, how many times have you wrapped a line around your hand for just a little more pulling power . . . Maybe just a little better grip? No big deal right?? WRONG!! Never wrap a line around your hands. EVER! If there is THAT much need for pulling power use a winch. Maybe a block and tackle! Why is it ok to wrap a line around your hand but not your neck?? I would not like to loose a hand! Also keep your lines tidy and put away. When you have guests aboard, they are likely to stand on or even sit on your lines. Have you ever had to ask a guest to lift a leg or foot so you could loosen a line? Not the guests fault! You should never allow your lines to just pile up on deck or worse in your cockpit when sailing. Keep them neatly stowed. Imagine coming about and your sheet is inadvertantly wrapped around a friends foot! You could accidently hurt them seriously!

Keep them lines secured!!

Question for today:

Speaking of lines,
Please match the definition with the term.

1) halyard
2) cunningham
3) guy
4) sheet

A) A block and tackle system used to control tension on the luff of the mainsail.
B) The windward spinnaker control line.
C) Line that controls a sail or the movement of a boom.
D) Line used for hoisting sails.

I was always told that line is a rope that has a purpose.

Great tips.
Its a line if its on a sailboat, powerboaters don't give a crap about seamanship, they've got places to be.

I personally consider somthing rope if its poor qualiy, inexpensive, and being used once or twice.

Had to use the process of elimination for the windward spinnaker control line, cause I've never flown one.

ANSWER:

1) D ........ Halyard Line used for hoisting sails.
2) A ........ Cunningham A block and tackle system used to control tension on the luff of the mainsail
3) B ........ Guy The windward spinnaker control line.

EDIT:This letter is correct however I mis copied the definition!!!
4) C ........ Sheet Line used for hoisting sails

It should read:
4) C ........ Sheet Line that controls a sail or the movement of a boom.

An interesting note:
I've heard the "guy" refered to as the "lazy guy". I however refuse to use this version of the term because it causes confusion. I believe folks assumed it was refering to me!!! LOL!!
