Overhaul... starboard bulkhead removed.

Post by hp18carr »

Starboard bulkhead removed and as expected five years of accumulation behind it, it may not be a problem but I'm only going to remove one bulkhead at a time to give me peace of mind as I walk on top. In most circles I'm not what one would consider a small man. Also as you will note forward I'm removing as much of the old flaking paint as I can as I go.

Been there before ! Dontcha love the way the cabinet came with the bulkhead. The reason ? If you were to remove the veneer from the forward side of the bulkhead, you'll likely find the hidden heads of the staples that were used to nail them together. At least that was EE's setup.

Made it nearly impossible to separate them, but I was only ripping it all out anyway

When it's all said and done I'm not sure just what the interior of Pandora will look like. That falls under my wife's jurisdiction.

Looks like you share my fondness for red plastic coffee cans too ! There's a couple on EE right now full of spare nuts, bolts, and assorted whatnot..also are good for pouring a bit of paint in so you don't have to lug the whole gallon can around.

curious; what is the best solution forthe ugly fabric that is falling off my cabin walls...underneath it is very rough fiberglass....

I don't think it can be sanded smooth and gelcoat as too much work, replacing with carpet is one solution, I am thinking using thin wood horizontal slats for a very yachty look but that might be a lot of work, and add a lot of weight too....

any thoughts, pics?

I have yet to cross that bridge myself and like you hope to use thin planking or nice plywood sheeting, but what I have seen a good number have gone with the carpet. The weight of what you use I would think would not be enough to worry about. Perhaps someone will post a few pics for the both of us.

I went with light rubber backed carpet. There is also a semi-burlap fabric I considered using. It was thick/rough enough to hide the lumpy fiberglass but more of a closed cell fabric than the original.

Also considered the type of replacement carpet used to line car trunks.

Have you guys considered pre-glued vinyl wood planks? I used them too refit the saloon sole. It looks like real wood, is thin and flexible, easy to cut and if applied correctly sticks like iron (was going to say glue, but that's what it is - LOL). I refiberglassed my floor, while fairly level it wasn't all that smooth so I think it would work on the rough fiberglass. I used a heat gun to help form the planks and, I think, setup the glue.
