The price isn't really unreasonable, compared to other solutions. It includes all the parts, except for the batteries.
Having regeneration is huge, if you only motor in and out of the marina, you'll never need to recharge the batteries and would get extra power for your house battery bank.
When I first bought "Ya Never Know" I (under)powered her with a 40# trolling motor. The quiet, no fumes, no oil, not having to "warm up" the motor, were all very, very nice. Unfortunatly safety takes precedence, and not having enough power to turn upwind in any wind over 10 knots or go against any currents created more unsafe situations. Since then, I've been researching all of the options for electric propulsion powerful enough to replace the gas outboard.
Solomon systems have some very nice high end units, but require an inboard or sail drive setup.
A large or multiple trolling motor is the least expensive option, but no regeneration, and you would have to re-rig the controller(s) to use them from the cockpit. If you used two of them, you could place them so that they didn't interfere with the rudder.
There are a several production electric outboards, one from MinnKota, but no regeneration and very close to the price of the e-pod.
You could DIY with a sail drive, inboard setup, or used outboard without the powerhead. With the motor, controller, and assorted parts, you might save half the price of the e-pod unit, maybe. (golf cart motor and controller around $1000-$1300) but you would have regeneration.

Could you not mount this motor to the hull...aft the keel? If I had some spare change I would definately have one of these!!! No more solar panels...no more outboard...this thing would really clean up/un-clutter the boat! I too use to use a trolling motor to get in and out of port...I miss the silent operation.

I saw the add in "This Old Boat" mag and the day dreaming begins. the battery weight on a C-22 would be the only thing that would concern me. I'm still not sure wher to stuff the first battery.Posted: Wed Aug 12, 2009 6:34 pm
That would be great to mount between Keel and rudder it would give you better rudder control at low speed for docking.
