forestay, bailers and shrouds

I don't post often....because I know so little!!!! However, I do read and am learning a lot about my Bucc, thanks to so many people.

I have a question about the items in the subject line. On a Bucc, pray tell, what is the trick to getting the forestay through the pulley under the deck at the bow of the boat? My old line was pretty old and after 4 or 5 attempts to get the eye on the forestay through the pulley I pulled a little harder than I obviously should have. The frayed old line gave up the ghost.......had to get the neighbors 8 year old daughter to crawl up there and feed it through. I would prefer not to repeat said performance cuz it just goes to show how much weight I've gained in the last 3 years. Won't fit through the hatch.

2nd question. The original, round bailers in a 1978 Bucc, is it possible to replace the O rings, lube them and have any success? Sure hope so.

I finally got to rig the boat in the driveway and learned literally TONS!!!! Of course that just opened the door for more questions. Question about the shourds is how tight should they be or can a novice tell by tension alone? Is the best teacher actually sailing the boat and watching shourd tension?

Perhaps, as I learn more, I can answer some simple questions, such as, "which side is port and which side is starboard". "Can you sail a boat when it is upside down in the water?" and "where does the gasoline go?".

No Buccies chiming in so I guess now that you've got the line run, just don't let it get in too bad a shape and you'll always be able to splice the old to the new and pull it thru. I bet you never have to do it again anyway.

Shroud tension, in lieu of any Loos gauge figures, yes, go by feel. The mast should be vertical (not leaning to port or starboard), and beyond that you want the lee shrouds to go slack a touch upwind. I'd just tighten enough to have the mast not flopping from side to side, and tune by trying her out. That said, I'm sure there's a "hot" setup for the Bucc, and maybe someone will come along with better ideas...

Thanks EE. The shrouds look and feel ok right now but it ain't in the water. The lines came in that bad a shape....shoulda changed them first, huh. Live & learn!
