Curtain Replacement
Curtain Replacement
While I was busy with other boat chores Cathy replaced our curtains with mini-blinds. We think it makes the cabin look a little more modern and open.
Please ignore the old holes that I need to fill.

old holes
Tom
Speaking of old holes I have a number of them, both starboard and port. During this overhaul I'll clean and repaint. The holes are unsightly, but would it be prudent not to fill them and just use them as ready made leak indicators? I'm sure this would be to my first mates disapproval.

As you can see, ours wept a bit.
We have some deck leaks and portlight leaks that I'm sealing up as I can, but it's very hard to know where the water is migrating from.
I have considered drilling some inconspicuous "early warning" holes though.

I like the "blinds". The brown stuff from the old pop-rivet holes is most likely from the phenolic core material used in the cabin top. The source is probably the screw holes for the slide for the main hatch or some other fittings that may be mounted on the cabin top. I've filled every hole up there with epoxy and will re-drill them and seal them with silicone when I reinstall the hardware. One 1/4" drank about 1/3 cup of resin. tgentry, since you are in IL, snow, ice, freeze, thaw are problems for water migration unless the boat is covered for the winter.

screw hole repair.
Forgive me for straying a bit off topic, but I would like to bend Brian's and others ears on screw hole repair. Before the holes are filled with epoxy are they over drilled... and by how much. The rule of thumb as I understand it is too treat the holes first with un-thickened epoxy coming back a little latter with thickened epoxy. The term shortcut is taboo in overhauling, but would going stright to a thickened epoxy... say West System's six10 be an unforgivable transgression?
