Rudder Craft | Chrysler 22

Post by Jacob Van Wie »

Has anyone used a rudder craft rudder for their Chrysler 20, 22, or 26?

I am in need of repairing mine, but am considering replacing the entire assembly. If anyone has used their products I'd like to know how they've held up.

Jacob,
I believe several people have used ruddercraft products. Try going to the general discussion and use the search feature for “ rudder “ and you will likely find information. The stock rudder floats up and is a pain to get down.
I drilled two 3” holes through one side of my rudder then poured in about 11 lb of lead then glassed it over. Looks original but the weight is just enough to keep it pointed down and I don’t have any trouble raising or lowering the rudder now.

I purchased the whole rudder tiller replacement system from Rudder Craft a few years ago. It did take quite a while for them to ship. I believe they are made to order. I had a few issues with the new system. It was made with a later model C22 through hull design that was not compatible with my 1976 boat. The bushings were not usable. I was able to reuse my old ones. The rudder itself is not designed to float. It is solid. It was nearly impossible to raise up in shallow water. I wound up installing the original rudder. The tiller is not curved like the one that came with my boat. I like my original tiller better. I believe Rudder Craft will sell parts of the kit now.
That said, the steering quality of the Rudder Craft parts was excellent and the customer service worked hard to help me with the project.
I use different color Dynema line for the rudder up down operation. I also have a bungee holding the down line in parallel. I use this in shallow water in case I run aground. (again). My original rudder torque tube was aluminum. It had considerable corrosion and eventually failed at the through hull.
